GM to Shut Down Saab

GM will end its SAAB brand starting in January.    After shutting down Saturn and Pontiac it's no surprise SAAB is ending its run  as well.    It sells few vehicles (I don't think they ever sold in high volume), so there is no one that wants to buy it.

So what brand is next to go?

Hummer?   Buick?   Hummer could still be sold, so that name will live on.   They are trying to revamp Buick but it seems like they don't really need another brand name anymore.    Its days (at least in the U.S., its popular in China for some reason) are numbered IMHO.

Chrysler is hanging on by a thread, now owned mostly by FIAT.  FIAT is hardly a great car company on its own,  Chrysler is probably a goner at some point.  It will at most,,, likely end up making mostly Jeeps and light trucks and minivans.  Selling FIAT's small cars from Europe in the U.S. as Chryslers and Dodges seem like a non-starter to me.   Little European cars have never sold well here in the U.S. no matter how expensive gas is.

The only other American car company is Ford.   So far Ford doesn't seem nearly as bad as the other two, even making a small profit in 2009.   But things could get worse for Ford.   Maybe Ford will ditch Mercury?   Its another of those brands that really don't make any sense anymore.

Liberals and greens have blamed the larger cars and trucks of the last decade as the reason for the automakers problems.   They are of course wrong on that.   Those were the only vehicles that have made money for the big three for the last 30 years, so it was the one right decision made by the automakers.    Americans still prefer larger cars and trucks,  and that won't change anytime soon.

Thanks to all the wrongheaded  things that have happened in the American auto industry over the last couple of decades,  is coming home to roost in a really bad way.  Ownership by the U.S. and Canadian  governments and the autoworker unions,    will only make the problems worse.   It doesn't look good.
